Introduction to Clothing Engineering

Clothing engineering is one of the textile engineering division that was established by the Faculty of Textile Engineering of Amirkabir University of Technology in 2014. Although in past clothing manufacturing process in our country was performed in small scale production, due to the development of production technology and its entrance to our country, majority of production units increased their production capacity and work in large and industrial scale. In this regard, clothing engineering were established according to the requirements of clothing manufacturers and survey of this field’s history in the other universities abroad.
Since this field is a division of textile engineering, a clothing engineer deals with yarn, various fabric types, interlining and other clothing’s accessories, hence, getting to know about spinning, weaving, knitting and non-woven process and their characteristics and dyeing, printing and finishing procedure is necessary.
As clothing manufacturing chain consisted of clothing design (knowing about clothing design process, effective elements on the clothing appearance such as line and point, pattern density and color combination), pattern making (identification of body measurements and their characteristics, sizing system creation and various elements of pattern), grading (making patterns of various sizing groups based on the reference table and introduction of industrial software package that are used for clothing production), marker making (placing patterns on the fabrics according to the fabric properties, its pattern and surface property in order to reduce fabric waste), spreading (calculating the number of required fabric layers based on the order capacity, equipment of the manufacturing unit, various fabric spreading methods according to the fabric type), cutting (Introduction of manual cutting equipment and CNC cutting machine, achieving the accurate cutting process), sewing (introduction of various seams and stitches, their properties and applications, sewing machinery and their selection for a production line), fusing (reinforcing fabric with different interlining based on the end use) and pressing (finishing and shaping of the final garment), related knowledge are provided in the clothing engineering courses. On the other hand, mechanical property of textile material in the clothing, not only predicts the production process, but also it can determine garment shaping during wear, aesthetics appearance of garment and provide wearing comfort of clothing.
In addition, clothing manufacturing process is a chain assembly of fabric pieces, hence determination of sequence of various stages and their timing in order to facilitate the work and decrease the production time is a must. Furthermore, clothing manufacturing is the last chain of textile production process; therefore, marketing, sales and customer relationship management help the clothing engineer succeed which are provided in the course planning.
