The laboratory complex of the Faculty of Textile Engineering, by providing specialized laboratory services in the fields of textiles, fibers, apparel, and melt spinning workshop, has created a foundation for the development of applied research and the enhancement of products in this sector.
According to the National Laboratory Network News Agency, Maryam Yousefzadeh, Deputy for Research and Director of the Laboratories at the Faculty of Textile Engineering, Amirkabir University (Tehran Polytechnic), spoke about the activities of this laboratory and research complex. She stated that the active textile engineering laboratories in the National Laboratory Network include four main facilities: the Fiber Physics Laboratory, Thermal Analysis Laboratory, Apparel Engineering Laboratory, and Melt Spinning Workshop.
In these laboratories, various tests related to determining the characteristics and properties of textiles, yarns, fibers, and related materials are conducted in accordance with standard measurement protocols.
She said: "In the melt spinning workshop, it is possible to produce various types of filament yarns through the melt spinning process on a semi-industrial and laboratory scale, determine their properties, and provide reverse engineering services."
She also explained: "In these laboratories, specialist experts in textile engineering, polymer sciences, and fibers are actively engaged in providing services. Each laboratory is supervised by an expert professor in the respective field."

Yousefzadeh stated that most companies and factories in Iran's textile and apparel industry are regular users of their laboratory services, particularly the Fiber Physics Laboratory. She explained: "For examining various physical properties of textiles, multiple tests are conducted, including strength testing, air permeability, water and water vapor permeability, and other physical characteristics of textiles such as determining fabric thickness under fixed and variable pressure, abrasion resistance, and pilling assessment."
This research and technology specialist further stated that special tests can also be conducted under specific temperature and humidity conditions in an environmental simulation chamber. She added: "In the Apparel Engineering Laboratory, the Tog-meter test is performed to determine the thermal resistance or thermal conductivity of textiles. In the Melt Spinning Workshop, it is possible to produce drawn filament yarns, conduct shrinkage tests on yarns, and perform fiber strength tests, along with providing related services."
She added that in the Thermal Analysis Laboratory of the Faculty of Textile Engineering, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) is used to identify various samples.
Yousefzadeh also spoke about the mechanical properties measurement device used to assess the tensile strength of yarns and fabrics until rupture. She explained: "Some tests are aimed at determining the physical characteristics of textiles. For this purpose, devices measuring air, water, and water vapor permeability in textiles are utilized."
The Director of the Laboratories at the Faculty of Textile Engineering, Amirkabir University, highlighted the role of the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) device, stating: "This device is used to identify various samples by detecting their chemical functional groups."
Yousefzadeh also discussed ongoing research projects, emphasizing: "Research and testing on knowledge-based products, including protective textiles, commercial gowns, respiratory masks, textile filters, hemostatic bandages, various burn, diabetic, and drug-delivery wound dressings, fiber-based artificial blood vessels, fiber braids for medical prostheses, drug-delivery sutures, as well as health-monitoring sensors, smart shoes for foot health tracking, and gait analysis, have contributed to technological advancements and quality improvements in this field."
This research and technology specialist highlighted the provision of laboratory services through the National Laboratory Network, stating: "The Faculty of Textile Engineering has a long history of offering laboratory and workshop services to researchers and industry professionals. However, starting from Aban 1403 (October 2024), it provides its services as an active member of the National Laboratory Network."
The Director of the Laboratories at the Faculty of Textile Engineering, Amirkabir University, also mentioned the organization of training programs, stating: "This year, short-term training courses in melt spinning were conducted. Additionally, a specialized multi-day course on detergents and their effects on textiles is being organized by the faculty's professors for engineers from a leading detergent manufacturing company. Some courses are held at the faculty, while others are conducted at manufacturing plants upon request."
She added: "Some international training courses have already been held at the faculty, and more are being planned, with details to be announced soon. Organizing and conducting short-term training courses is also one of the key activities of the Research and Industry Relations section of the faculty, targeting researchers and professionals working in the industry."
She expressed hope that with the support of officials, the upgrading of equipment, and the facilitation of research conditions, we will witness greater progress in the valuable efforts of dedicated researchers and the practical application of research findings in driving economic development and advancing science and technology in our beloved country, Iran.
It is worth noting that the laboratory complex at the Faculty of Textile Engineering, Amirkabir University of Technology, is an active member of the National Laboratory Network and is located in Tehran. It provides a wide range of laboratory services in the fields of fibers, thermal analysis, apparel engineering, and melt spinning.
The list of equipment, services, and testing methods available at the laboratory complex of the Faculty of Textile Engineering, Amirkabir University of Technology, can be viewed on the National Laboratory Network's information portal.
