Department Information

The Textile Department of Amirkabir University of Technology (A.U.T) established in 1957 is the only educational institution offering M. Sc. And Ph.D degrees in textile in the Islamic Republic of Iran. It is one of the well equipped departments of A.U.T. The students can work with machineries similar to those which they are likely to meet in the industry. There are different workshops such as spinning weaving, dying, printing and finishing. There are also laboratories for textile physics quality control and color chemistry. The newly established Textile and fiber Research Center also planned to work with the corporation of Textile Department.

Teaching Program

At present the department has a teaching staff of 34 and four different groups which consists of textile technology, textile chemistry and fiber science, textile managements and clothing. Currently 320 under graduate, 134 master and 22 PhD students are studying in various fields of textile engineering at this department. On average, the department accepts annually some 75 students for undergraduate and 63 for graduate programs.


The research activities of this department include:

•  Projects related to the dissertations and theses of students at all levels

•  Projects for industry

•  Independent research projects

•  Projects carried out in the man-made fibre research centre

Fields of Research

The broad range of research currently carried out at this department covers areas concerning the all aspects of fibres, fabrics, including processes and machinery. These include interaction of material and machinery, characterization of fibre forming polymers, conversion of fibres into yarns and fabrics, structural mechanics of textiles.

Industry-Related Activities

One of the teaching aims of the textile engineering department is to improve the technological skills of workers and professionals in the textile industry. Consequently, various courses are held by the department to achieve this aim. So far four long-term courses have been held for the Textile Industrial Committee of Iran and two are currently being held as well as a number of short-term courses according to the needs of the industrial centers and factories.
